Borgess Run Campers ran shorter distances Saturday in order to be fully rested for the transition into "Changes," the full-blown version of what Chris Lampen-Crowell calls RunCampNation. Everyone gathers at 7:30 next Saturday to welcome folks who have been home for the past eight weeks watching cartoons.

The Bellhop Riddle

You know the riddle about the three people who . . . oh, anyway, (we've printed it below the photos in case you're curious) we've got the photographic version of that in the team blog pictures, where we've managed to publish 25 team photos below, using 21 photos but somehow we're missing one team. Can you figure out which team?

The Bellhop Riddle:
Three guests check into a hotel room. The clerk says the bill is $30, so each guest pays $10. Later the clerk realizes the bill should only be $25. To rectify this, he gives the bellhop $5 to return to the guests. On the way to the room, the bellhop realizes that he cannot divide the money equally. As the guests didn't know the total of the revised bill, the bellhop decides to just give each guest $1 and keep $2 for himself.

Now that each of the guests has been given $1 back, each has paid $9, bringing the total paid to $27. The bellhop has $2. If the guests originally handed over $30, what happened to the remaining $1?

Unbeknownst to hundreds of happy campers, SnowBusters Inc. was recently the target of an investigation by the Internal Revenue Service, but aside from the cost of payments to some "expert witnesses," escaped unscathed. SnowBusters sent its crack team of lawyers from Dewey Cheatham & Howe to defend camp practices. Here's a transcript of the testimony that, in essence, got SnowBusters off the proverbial hook:

IRS Examiner: "Mr. Torrence (acting counsel), it's clear your camp takes advantage of unsuspecting and innocent victims, leaving them poorer for the experience, fatigued, often discouraged and even, at times, injured."

Torrence: "We do our best, sir."

IRS Inquisitor: "But you provide no practical service. Your blogs are a joke. The campers themselves do all of your work."

Torrence: "True, enough. We provide no service."

IRS Interrogator: "Then how can you justify your service?"

Torrence: "We don't provide a service, sir. We produce a product."

IRS Chief of Torture: "A product you say. And just might that product be that you produce."

Torrence: "We produce smiles."

"The shorter run, the warmer weather -- hey, just the change of scenery -- that made it special," remarked Team Leader and Veteran Camper Wendy Geerings after Saturday's run on the last week of "Breaking The Ice." After two miserable weeks of cold and biting winds, camp organizers moved the camp as far south as they could, much to the delight of weary campers. Photo ops, though, were scarce as Camp Photographer Bobbie Lam was working a wedding.

More than one team leader Saturday called the run one of the most challenging and difficult runs they've EVER taken. Words like yuck and suck were common. A fairly decent-sized email barrage covered a lot of the territory about just how bad it was until Cheri Kurtz weighed in with this perspective:

"You may recognize me in the runblog photo as the woman with her hands in the air begging for the pain to stop :0) The run was tough, no doubt....it is hard to understand what drives us to do what we do sometimes, for sure...especially in weather like this! But, WE DID IT. What gets me through is the complete miracle of this experience....two years ago I sent an email to Borgess health and fitness and they forwarded it to Blaine, who sent me a lengthy instruction on how to start running. I always saw people out running and wanted to do it, but didn't know how to start, so I read the email and started, and I could literally run only 1/2 the distance from one corner of my block to another..1/20 of a mile at a time....and kept adding, kept running on sheer determination and bullheadedness, completed the Borgess 1/2 last year and now training for the first Kzoo marathon. Yesterday, as I reached the top of the hill on Kilgore getting ready to turn back onto Bronson Blvd. ~ my son was out in front of me battling all these elements as well, a good friend running beside me, the fricking snow stinging my eyes, snot rolling out of my nose and tears running down my cheeks, I realized that we may really be able to do this, run this distance, achieve this goal. THAT is what gets me through. And you all did it too! Yay all of us!
